I had a call recently from someone saying that he had this Unidentified Network Error in Vista which made it so he couldn’t access the Internet on his laptop when he connected to his wireless router. If he used his Ethernet connection, the connection worked just fine. Since I don’t use Windows Vista, I wasn’t really familiar with the problem, but with a simple Google search I found out that it’s a huge issue and countless numbers of people are giving up on Vista just because of the Unidentified Network Error or just letting their computers gather dust as it does a great impersonation of a giant paper weight.

Hopefully updates will be made to fix this common error, because in the end, that’s part of the customer service experience while fixing the unidentified network error. 3 Quick Steps to Fix Windows Vista Unidentified Network Error

If you see this “unidentified network error“, here’s a simple fix:

Open the Control Panel and click on Network Connections

1) Right-click on your connection that is having problems (this will be local area connection or the wireless connection) and select properties.

2) Under the Networking tab, uncheck the option for Internet Protocol Version 6, then click ok.

Right-click on your network connection again and select disable, then right click on it once more and enable it.

Or your can open the command prompt (start > type: CMD [hit enter]), then run: ipconfig /renew

Wait a couple of minutes and you should be set.

The Windows Vista unidentified network error should now be fixed.

Alternate solution to Windows Unidentified Network Error

If this still does not work, here’s another solution:

Click on START, then RUN, type: CMD and press ENTER.

Type the following and then press ENTER.

ROUTE DELETE 0.0.0.0

Restart the computer and see if the connection has been updated.

     Neither of these solutions solved my problem with a fresh install of Vista - with all the latest patches and drivers.. It was working fine then I got this ridiculous ‘unidentified network’ message. I mean, how helpful is that Mr William DeadBrain Gates! Over the years using win 3.1 95, 98, millenium, xp I have come to the conclusion that Microsoft is a majorly dysfunctional organisation that can’t get its basic operating system RIGHT

    All i did was open CMD as admin and type ‘netsh winsock reset’
    Works perfectly fine after that.

    hello!! Maybe I just exaggerated things last time. You know, your steps are really helpful and did solve my problem but then I thought it did. coz’ after a day til now, I still experience the same problem. what should i do now? everytime i repeat ur steps, how come the answer is always “an error ocurred and can’t contact ur DHCP server blah blah blah….” THANK YOU!

    I am getting ‘An error occurred while renewing interface wireless connection 70 : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out. No operation can be performed on local Area Conection while it has its media disconnected. an error occurred while releasing interface Loopback pseudo-Interface 1: the system cannot find the file specified.
    Help Please! I cannot solve this and have spent hours trying to get internet access for my daughters computer.

    I went through this menace during last two days couldnt find anything absolutely anything on internet to solve this problem for me. I called my internet service company helpline, the guy told me to connect the laptop through ethernet cable and allow him to take control, he thereafter just changed the name of network to one with less alphabets, password or phrase to a short pin of numeric ones, wpa-personal to wep and everything started working :)

    i went round and round with all the suggestions and just read below about “just changed the name of network to one with less alphabets, password or phrase to a short pin of numeric ones” - the last thing i did was make the network name and passphrase numeric and now it is working .. is that what fixed it ? i hate vista!
